You build it, you own it
There are over 100 engineering teams in Infobip, covering our full stack platform from servers, network and storage up to client facing applications. While there are teams that handle common infrastructure for the whole company, the development teams are end-to-end responsible for their part of the system. There is no handover to some "QA" team, "Security team," "Operations" team, etc. Many tools, processes, and other teams in Infobip help each team perform all of these responsibilities.
With great freedom about the choice of tools, technologies, services and frameworks which teams will use to create their products, comes great responsibility. This means that a team isn't only responsible for design and development but also for production - following the main working principle "You build it, you own it.". That is why teams have the responsibility to take care of:
- System design and architecture
- Development (implementation)
- Testing & QA
- Deployment & release
- Production operations & monitoring
- Support & incident response
- Maintenance & bug fixing
- Scaling & optimization
- Iteration & continuous improvement
In order to make your work as part of such a team easier, we give each team the freedom to decide and define their way of work by defining their Working agreement, Definition of Done etc., while aligning it with principles and some common ground rules. On top of the freedom about technical choices, there is also a freedom of deciding on things like:
- How will they estimate tasks
- Will they use Scrum or Kanban
- Will they use Pull request reviews and/or pair/mob programming
- How will they organize internal meetings
- How they will organize troubleshooting and support rotation
- When is the feature ready for production, i.e. when can the task be moved to done
- How will they use their education time
- How will they exchange knowledge and experience
Sometimes, this level of freedom may seem intimidating because there are just too many options to choose from, but that’s what colleagues willing to help, all 800+ of them, are here for! We encourage teams to experiment and find the way of work that suits them the best.
